Using XMPP with LaTwit

The XMPP feature in LaTwit allows you to get real-time updates from Laconi.ca sites or to track keywords using laconica@spy.west.net. It also allows you to show IM messages directly in the timeline. To use XMPP with LaTwit, you first need to have a Jabber compatible IM account such as Gmail. The TWiT Army Boot Camp page has a great tutorial on setting up your IM account to talk to the TwitArmy and to do tracking through laconica@spy.west.net. Go there now and get your IM client working first. Once that is done, setting up XMPP in LaTwit is easy. You just put in your personal IM account settings on the XMPP setup page in LaTwit. For gmail, the server name is talk.gmail.com, the account is youraccount@gmail.com. Once that is done, all messages that would normally come into your IM account will now display in the LaTwit timeline. If you add more Laconica services to your IM account list, then they will automatically start showing up in LaTwit. If you add friends to your IM account, then their messages to you will appear instantly in the LaTwit timeline.

Sending URL links from Safari to LaTwit

Version 1.3 now allows web page URLs in Safari to be passed in to LaTwit. To use this feature, bring up any page in Safari, and then add latwit:// at the beginning (before the http://) and press go. LaTwit will launch and a new notice entry will start with the URL pasted in. You can automate this by making a bookmark in safari, name it "Send To LaTwit" and save. Edit the bookmark and put this in the address line:

javascript:window.location=’latwit://’+window.location

Now you can select this bookmark anytime you want to send the current page URL to LaTwit.
